Notre Dame suspends its top running back

Notre Dame has suspended running back Cierre Wood two games for violating team rules, head coach Brian Kelly announced.Wood, a senior, rushed for 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns in 2011. Theo Riddick and George Atkinson will likely split time until Wood returns.Brian Kelly also announced that junior defensive end Justin Upton has been suspended two games."Our players are aware of the standards I set for our program and that failure to meet my expectations will result in consequences," said Kelly. "Justin and Cierre violated our team rules so I've suspended them for the first two games of the season."The team will be making the trip to Dublin for their season opener later this week.

Wood, a senior, rushed for 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns in 2011. Senior Theo Riddick and sophomore George Atkinson III likely will get most of the carries during Wood's suspension.

Kelly also announced that junior defensive end Justin Utupo has been suspended two games.

"Our players are aware of the standards I set for our program and that failure to meet my expectations will result in consequences," Kelly said. "Justin and Cierre violated our team rules so I've suspended them for the first two games of the season."

The Irish will open their season against Navy in Dublin on Saturday.
