Houston offensive coordinator out after opener

Wow. That didn't take long.

One bad day was all it took for Houston to change offensive coordinators.

First-year Cougars head coach Tony Levine announced Monday that Mike Nesbitt had resigned his post and assistant Travis Bush would take over play-calling duties.

Houston dropped its season opener Saturday 30-13 to Texas State, a school in its first full season in the Western Athletic Conference that is still transitioning from the Football Championship Subdivision.

"We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Houston program," Levine said in a statement. "We are confident in Travis and his play-calling ability moving forward."

The statement said neither school officials nor Levine would have further comment.

In addition to breaking in a new coaching staff with the departure of Kevin Sumlin for Texas A&M, the Cougars also lost record-setting quarterback Case Keenum to graduation. Successor David Piland did have some game experience prior to this season, but he managed only 211 passing yards completing 17-of-44 attempts in Saturday's loss.

Houston's 13 points and 326 yards of offense were its lowest figures since a 56-7 loss to Tulsa in 2007.

Bush served as offensive coordinator at UT-San Antonio last season. Prior to that, he was co-coordinator at — Texas State. The Cougars host Louisiana Tech, another WAC team, Saturday.
